  • We currently are in the most difficult times of our lives.  We are told to be socially distant from our friends, neighbors, even some of our family (especially if you are a front line worker). We feel socially isolated, except for online interactions.  This helps, but cannot replace the feeling of hanging out with your friends and family especially on happy occasions.

We are told to keep at least 6 feet of distance between individuals.  We are told to wear a mask or covering to protect not only yourself, but others as well.  We have run out of certain supplies, supplements, frozen food, etc.

Our schools have closed, graduates have missed their graduations.  Birthday parties, weddings and  other happy occasions, have been cancelled or postponed to a later date.

Our lives have changed dramatically in a short time.  We are angry, frustrated, sad, fearful and more.

How do we pick ourselves up and go forward from here?

Have you ever taken a walk and noticed how quiet it can be, especially now by noticing the birds chirping, the squirrels playing, ducks swimming, etc.  This is probably the first time in a long while that they have more of a playground then ever before.  They also, along with other wildlife, know instinctually how to survive when in danger.  Humans have this innate nature as well. However, we seem to forget and let fear get in our way. Then we shut down.

It is imperative to remove the obstacles of fear, anger, frustration, sadness, etc. and take action instead. Sitting around watching tv and eating junk all day is only going to feed our negative emotions more and not help us in the long run.  Here are a few suggestions in getting out of your own way:

    1.  Start a diary.  Write every morning or evening how you feel physically and emotionally.  Let it flow don’t judge or be critical of yourself. Add 3-5 things you are grateful for each day.
    2.  Get dressed for the day.  Can be in comfortable clothes. This helps you take action
    3.  Exercise – If you have a treadmill or other cardio equipment, dust it off and get moving.  Start with a minimum of 10 minutes and work up to 45 minute to 1 hour.  If you don’t, go for a walk, same timing (remember to wear a mask if near people).  Also, do some light weights or use your body as a weight to build muscle, such as push ups & sit ups, 3-4x week.  Stretch daily and do yoga a few times per week also. This helps you start moving and get your day started.
    4. Prep & Cook Your Meals – Make simple meals that are easy and low stress.  Plan ahead so you don’t get lazy and choose unhealthy meals. There is nothing better than home cooking! Have fun trying new recipes.
    5. Reach out to friends/family a few times per week. Helping others, helps us feel better, more accomplished and gets us motivated for helping ourselves.
    6. Keep focusing on the positive-  what is working vs what isn’t.  Make a daily list of positives.

It is important to remember that doing the above, keeps you moving.  Staying stuck, get’s you nowhere.  It is your choice how you handle each day, but I suggest to keep moving and get into your groove to heal from your power within.
