Our greatest strength is our inner well-being. This includes our thoughts, feelings,
and emotions. We are all going through one of the most difficult times in history.
How we cope with this time is essential to our well-being.Even though we are supposed to “socially distance” (it should be called physically distancing instead.) it does not mean we need to disconnect from people.
Thankfully we have technology today where we can connect online with our friends and family. Humans by nature are social beings, and we must connect in some way with others at least on a weekly basis. This is an excellent way of taking care of ourselves and others. On and off for years, I have suffered from depression and know firsthand that being alone with our thoughts, is unhealthy and dangerous. So reaching out to someone is important. I have learned that it is important to be productive on a daily basis, even if you are not working or are retired. This includes a hobby that makes you happy, meeting with friends, making a new recipe, taking an online class, doing a puzzle, watching a good movie, listening to music, reading, exercising, learning a new skill, etc. This does not mean to be a couch potato and watching tv for endless hours, being on social media sites all day, and over-doing anything.
Do you cope by holding in your emotions? Do you reach out to a friend or family member when you are feeling down and are not able to be productive?
Do you tend to be an emotional eater? Do you eat when you are bored?
If so, you can try some of the suggestions above and also journal. Journaling is extremely helpful to getting in touch with our inner-self if we emotionally eat, are depressed, lonely, etc. It helps us see where we might be having a hard time and can be a great tool to help us cope with some of our difficulties.
