After going to the health food store for a few years, I learned enough to help myself, my family and my friends.  I started to notice some differences and started to gain a bit more energy. I bought mainly organic fruits, vegetables and meat. In doing so, I felt that we were not only helping ourselves, but our environment as well.  I was way ahead of my time, as “health food” was frowned upon then. To me, even if I was considered strange or “not normal”, I was proud to stand out of the crowd.  I was supported by like-minded people and families. I kept going forward, continued to only shop at health food stores and every year started to feel a little better.  (It takes 7 years for your cells to change positively).

I removed wheat & dairy from my family’s diet.  My kids benefitted from this greatly, as my son had many ear infections as a baby through age 5.  When I took away milk/dairy, he had fewer to almost no ear infections anymore!  My daughter had allergies, eczema and asthma.  For years she was using her inhaler and medication when needed.  Once her diet changed, her  eczema & asthma improved over time. By seeing these changes in my family, I realized that I was doing the right thing, even if it was against the mainstream.  Health food stores did not only carry “healthy” foods.  They did have a lot of junk also, but healthier than the mainstream.  Yes, health food store prices are higher, but isn’t your health worth it?  You save in the long run by putting healthier foods that do not have pesticides and preservatives in them.  Luckily, in the late 90’s to early 2000’s, health food went mainstream.  Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s opened as well as some supermarkets started to carry health food items. This made things much easier for myself and other families.  Unfortunately, some health food stores went out of business due to the competition.

As my kids were getting older, I placed more emphasis on my own health once again.  I realized my stomach was still very bloated and my digestion was not good.  I researched what it might be and saw many doctors.  Some mainstream, some more holistic.  I realized, from all my research, I probably knew almost as much, if not more than they did.  So, I followed my heart.  I learned a great deal on digestive health and ended up taking a difficult course on the subject.  It was very informative and helpful.  The main thing I learned was that with any illness, your digestion is the most important thing to take care of first!  I wish I knew this and other information when I was younger, so I would have been able to take care of the problem long ago!
