• Now that it is November, the holidays are just around the corner. It is probably the most stressful time of year for most people.  Making plans and  preparing ahead of time are important to reduce stress. I know, it is easier said than done.  However, have you ever thought, that if I get things done in advance, I can relax and enjoy the holidays with my family and friends? If you have thought of this, have you followed through each year?  If yes, kudos to you, if not, what holds you back? I suggest jotting down what might hold you back through the last 5 years.  Notice any patterns and look to slowly break through them. Here are some suggestions for reducing stress:

    1.  Breathe and take deep breaths – If you feel your body being tense and you are clenching your jaw or teeth, it’s time to take a few deep breaths. Also, if you are having a stressful day remember to breathe! Look at the above picture and practice taking some deep breaths.  Notice how you feel after.

    2.  Exercise – This is how to reduce stress, increase endorphins and help you feel better overall.  Exercise a minimum of 10-15 min per day.  This can be a brisk walk, stair climbing, running, lifting light weights, playing sports such as tennis, pickle ball, yoga and more!  Do what you enjoy and be consistent!

    3.  Meditate – Take your breath to a deeper level.  Start with 2-5 minutes per day, and increase overtime.  There are several apps to help you such as : Calm app, Chopra app, Headspace, Buddhify and more.  Meditation is made much simpler today and even just 2 minutes can help alleviate stress in the body during the holidays and more.

    4.  Reach Out to a Friend – Talking to a friend can be helpful when under stress.  You can brainstorm on how to have fun during the holidays, rather than overdoing preparation, shopping, etc.

    5.  Have Fun Preparing vs Stressing – Make lists beforehand and shop ahead of time.  Don’t overthink things.  Keep it simple and get others to help you prepare.  Make it fun, have your kids help from making their own list to helping with preparation.

    6.  Do One Thing At A Time  – Stress comes on when we think or do too much at once.  Read that twice!  Slow down, take those breaths and make it simple. Focus on the priorities and make sure you write down in order of priority, doing one priority at a time.  You got this, now go to it!!  Enjoy 🙂
